GOP: People of color need not apply

DOES DEMOCRACY seem to be out-of-kilter when a major political party - the NSGOP (Not So Grand Old Party) - is counting on victories in the November elections by bashing three groups of color: Hispanics, Muslims and African-Americans, appealing to culturally and racially charged nativist voters. It's a shameful chapter in American history, but it could work.

The Southern Strategy is in full implementation mode by the GOP. In fact, the faces of leadership very much have a southern drawl. I just sit back and wait to see how much further they will divide people (rich from poor, white from brown and black) once they are back in power.

So much for the American dream, posted on the Statue of Liberty in the eloquent words of Emma Lazarus, "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses, yearning to breathe free..." I challenge any of the party's candidates to step up before the crowd and repeat those words today and believe them, too.

Yes, the Know Nothing Party rides again. At one time, it was the Irish and German Catholic immigrants who threatened the "purity" of the American populace. Now it's Hispanics and Muslims. This country grows older but not wiser. Descendants of 1840s Irish and Catholics now scream about threats to Foundation Father values. Go figure .........

PJ: Have you noticed how Joe Lieberman stumbled around explaining his opposition to the mosque. Eric Cantor was just as foolish. I wonder if they should be reminded of how the Spanish Inquisition purged the Jews - and the Muslims - to purify the country.
